Planning a trip to Greece next summer and feeling overwhelmed by just how many islands there are to choose from? You’re not alone. After visiting many of these islands myself, both on solo trips and island-hopping itineraries, and sending countless clients to Greece who absolutely adored their trips, I’ve narrowed it down to my top eight Greek islands to visit in 2026.
While the Cyclades tend to get most of the attention thanks to their easy ferry access from Athens, I always encourage travelers to look toward the Ionian side of Greece as well. They’re just as breathtaking, often greener, and offer a completely different experience. Below, I’m starting with some of the more popular islands that are still 100% worth visiting, and explaining who each island is best for, so you can decide what fits your travel style best.
Paros

Recently named the #1 island in the world for 2025 by Travel + Leisure, Paros has quickly become a favorite among travelers searching for a Mykonos alternative that still offers style, nightlife, and stunning beaches, without the overwhelming crowds or price tag (for now).
Whether you’re spending your days at beach clubs in the north, enjoying long summer nights in Naoussa, or escaping to the quieter southern villages, Paros truly has something for everyone. It’s an ideal blend of energy and relaxation, with just enough adventure sprinkled in. Located only a few hours from Athens by ferry, Paros is also perfectly positioned for a quick catamaran trip to its charming sister island, Antiparos.
Beaches to add to your list: Kolymbithres, Monastiri Beach, Kalogeros, Small Santa Maria, Lageri Beach, Nea Chrisi Akti, and Parasporos.
Highlights: Explore Paros Park, visit Agios Ioannis Detis, tour a winery, or take a traditional Greek cooking class.
Best for:
- First-time Greece visitors
- Couples who want lively nights + relaxed days
- Travelers who love chic beach clubs without Mykonos chaos

Milos

Milos is one of those islands that instantly stays with you—and one I’m personally itching to return to. Famous for its moon-like landscapes and iconic Sarakiniko Beach, Milos is a dream for travelers who love exploring unique coastlines and discovering hidden swimming spots.
The island feels tranquil and authentic, with locals who have preserved its charm. Renting a car is the easiest way to explore, though many of Milos’ most spectacular beaches, like Kleftiko, are only accessible by boat.
Must-visit beaches & spots: Paliochori (mineral-rich waters), Tsigrado (ladder access only), Firiplaka, Pollonia (perfect sunsets), and the colorful fishing villages of Mandrakia, Firopotamos, and Klima.
* Some of these villages even offer seafront Airbnbs, making Milos perfect for a slow, scenic stay.
Best for:
- Beach lovers who want variety
- Travelers who enjoy nature and photography
- Couples seeking romance without crowds

Crete

Crete is one of the few Greek islands you can visit again and again, and still feel like you’ve barely scratched the surface (speaking from experience after returning in 2025). As Greece’s largest island, Crete deserves time, and I highly recommend spending at least five days to a week here.
From the Venetian charm of Chania, to the intimate beauty of Rethymno, to the historic heart of Heraklion, Crete offers an unmatched mix of beaches, adventure, history, and culture.
Highlights: Elafonissi and Falassarna beaches, Balos Lagoon, hiking in Samaria Gorge, visiting the ancient Palace of Knossos, exploring Spinalonga Island, and discovering hidden freshwater springs and waterfalls.
Best for:
- Travelers who want it all (beach, culture, adventure)
- History lovers
- Repeat Greece visitors
- Longer stays or road trips

Kefalonia

Located in the Ionian Sea, Kefalonia is known for its dramatic landscapes and some of the bluest waters in all of Greece. This is a large island, and renting a car is essential to fully experience its beauty.
From iconic Myrtos Beach to Melissani Cave, charming villages like Fiskardo and Assos, and day trips to Ithaca (the legendary home of Odysseus), Kefalonia rewards travelers who like to explore at a slower pace. You can spend three to four days here and see a lot of the island and not feel like you missed out on anything,
Highlights: Petani Beach, Drogarati Cave, Castle of Agios Georgios, and Mount Ainos. You’ll also find excellent snorkeling and even sea turtle sightings.
Best for:
- Nature lovers
- Couples seeking a slower, scenic escape
- Travelers who enjoy road trips and hidden viewpoints
Zakynthos

Zakynthos is famous for the jaw-dropping Navagio (Shipwreck) Beach, but this island offers far more than just one photo-worthy stop. Whether you arrive by boat, view it from above, or paraglide down to the shore, the experience is unforgettable.
Beyond Navagio, explore the Blue Caves, snorkel in the Keri Caves, spot sea turtles nesting at Laganas Bay, hike the Keri Cliffs, and party in Zante Town. Banana Beach is perfect for water sports, while spots like Porto Limnionas and Mizithres Beach are ideal for swimming and cliff jumping.
Best for:
- Adventure seekers
- Groups of friends
- Travelers who want beaches and nightlife
Skiathos

If you’re a Mamma Mia! fan, Skiathos is a must. While parts of the movie were filmed here, on nearby Skopelos, and in Croatia, Skiathos is the best base for exploring all filming locations by boat.
This island surprised me with its charm, lush landscapes, and variety of beaches. You can reach Skiathos easily by ferry or plane from Athens. While renting a car is ideal, buses and taxis work well for shorter stays.
Highlight: Koukounaries Beach, Lalaria Beach, Mandraki Forest, Banana Beach, Aselinos Beaches, the Old Castle, and the open-air cinema.
Best for:
- Movie lovers
- Travelers wanting something beyond the Cyclades
- Couples and friend groups
Naxos

While Paros may be trending, Naxos continues to be a longtime favorite, especially for families and couples. This large Cycladic island offers stunning beaches, rich history, and a laid-back vibe.
Visit the iconic Portara (Temple of Apollo), explore traditional villages, shop for handmade pottery, and take boat trips to nearby islands like Koufonisia, one of Greece’s true hidden gems.
Highlights: Plaka, Agia Prokopios, Mikri Vigla, and Hawaii Beach. Naxos is also one of the best islands in the Cyclades for windsurfing and scuba diving.
Best for:
- Families
- Active travelers
- Couples wanting a relaxed, authentic feel
Corfu

Rounding out the list is Corfu, another Ionian gem with lush landscapes, turquoise waters, and endless activities. From hiking and wellness retreats to cliff jumping and nightlife, Corfu truly has something for everyone. A car is essential here, as many of the island’s most beautiful spots are tucked between mountains and winding roads.
Highlights: Porto Timoni, Canal d’Amour, La Grotta, Sidari, Kassiopi, and Agia Triada Beach. Boat trips to Parga, Albania, and Paxos (with some of the clearest water I’ve ever swum in) are absolute musts.
Best for:
- Adventure travelers
- Groups with mixed interests
- Longer stays with variety
How to Island-Hop Greece in 2026 with these 8 islands:
For the smoothest experience, group islands by region:
- Cyclades: Paros, Naxos, Milos, Crete
- Ionian Islands: Kefalonia, Zakynthos, Corfu
Skiathos works beautifully as a standalone island or as an add-on thanks to easy access from Athens by plane or ferry.
