I Ate My Way Through Crete: The Best Restaurants Across the Island

I’ve been to many islands in Greece and tasted some of the most incredible food, fresh seafood straight from the sea, traditional Greek dishes passed down through generations, sweet figs and honey, even Michelin-starred restaurants. But there is no island that compares to the food you’ll eat in Crete. And that’s one of the main reasons I found myself back on the island in the summer of 2025.

Cretan cuisine is deeply rooted in local ingredients, simplicity, and tradition, and you can taste it in every bite. From olive oil pressed nearby to vegetables grown just up the road, the food here feels intentional, comforting, and unforgettable. The iconic dakos salad, which originated in Crete, became a staple of my meals while traveling, and still finds its way onto my table when I’m back home.

Below are my top favorite restaurants in Crete, spanning from Chania to Rethymno to Heraklion, and the places that truly stood out while I ate my way across the island.

The Secret Gorge, Rethymno ($$$)

This intimate and personal dining experience was everything…and more. You could want in a Cretan feast. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Zourida Gorge near Rethymno, the evening felt less like a restaurant and more like being welcomed into someone’s home.

Wine flowed generously, plates kept coming, and the hosts were incredibly warm and welcoming. The long communal table was filled with a mix of American and Greek travelers, which made the experience even more special, sharing stories, laughter, and food with strangers who quickly felt like friends.

The meal included a charcuterie board, fresh salads, lamb, pasta, mushrooms, and an impressive spread of desserts. If you don’t eat meat, note that some of the main dishes may not be suitable, but between the pasta, salads, appetizers, and (let’s be honest) the amount of wine, I left more than satisfied.

With only twelve guests seated per night, this exclusive dinner and wine-tasting experience is truly once-in-a-lifetime. Watching the sunset over the gorge while sharing plates felt like a traditional Greek village dinner come to life. Reservations are essential, and this is absolutely a must-visit restaurant in Crete.

Peskesi, Heraklion ($$)

If you’re wandering the alleyways of Heraklion and stumble upon Peskesi, consider yourself very lucky. Tucked away in plain sight, this restaurant serves some of the most authentic and thoughtfully prepared Cretan dishes I had on the island.

Every dish highlights fresh, local ingredients and honors traditional recipes, and it’s easy to see why Peskesi is consistently rated as one of the best restaurants in Heraklion. The atmosphere is charming, the service is warm, and the food speaks for itself. If you want a true taste of Crete while exploring the city, this is a must-stop. It was also rated one of the best restaurants to eat at on 2025!

Chrisostomos, Chania ($)

For a cozy, heartwarming meal right in the port of Chania, Chrisostomos delivers that “home-cooked by Yiayia” feeling in the best way. The local energy here is undeniable, and the prices make it even better.

You’ll find classic Greek favorites like briam, melizanosalata (eggplant dip), dakos salad, kolokithokeftedes, souvlaki, and more. Everything is comforting, flavorful, and deeply traditional. I recommend checking their seasonal offerings before reserving, it’s one of those places that feels like a hidden gem despite being close to the tourist buzz.

Taverna Despina, Near Asomatos ($)

After hiking the Kourtaliotiko Gorge, we were starving and looking for something simple before heading to our next destination. Stumbling upon Taverna Despina near the village of Asomatos turned out to be one of the best meals of the trip.

This family-owned taverna serves food that tastes like it was made just for you, because it was. Everything was cooked fresh on the spot. We shared saganaki, salad, and tzatziki, and it was hands-down the best meze we had in Crete. The owners chatted with us about our travels and even brought out fresh fruit for dessert.

Koundourakis Taverna, Argyroupoli ($$)

Located near the famous Argyroupoli waterfalls, this taverna is known for its dramatic setting, with mini waterfalls cascading down the cliffs beside the dining area. It was busy, with a few similar establishments nearby, but the views made it a worthwhile stop.

While it wasn’t our favorite meal on the island, the food was enjoyable and the atmosphere made for a great lunch break after a long day of driving and exploring. A solid pit stop if you’re in the area and who doesn’t love a good waterfall view?

Cavo Rethymno, Rethymno ($$$)

I discovered Cavo Rethymno on TikTok, and with great reviews and limited availability, I booked it in advance. The atmosphere did not disappoint, DJ, seaside views, sunset vibes, and a restaurant that slowly turns into a mini club as the night goes on.

The food was good, though not the most impressive for the price compared to other meals we had in Crete. That said, it could have come down to what we ordered. If you’re craving a Mykonos-style dinner vibe in Crete, this is a fun spot for a night out.

Armonia Essential Gastronomy, Georgioupoli ($$)

One of the highest-rated restaurants in Georgioupoli, Armonia is part of a resort but open to the public, and worth visiting if you are in the area. We somehow managed to secure a same-day reservation in mid-August (a miracle during peak season) and were seated at a table overlooking the water.

My friends and I ordered a meze spread featuring Greek dips, cheeses, and fruit, along with fried feta (a delicious change from saganaki). While we enjoyed the experience overall, we found ourselves loving the appetizers more than the main dishes. Still, the service, views, and setting made it a lovely first dinner in Crete.

Elemes Cretan Cuisine ($$–$$$)

This highly rated restaurant is located on our resort property but is open to the public, and it ended up being one of the best meals of the entire trip. I couldn’t have asked for a better place to spend our final night in Crete.

We ordered a dip sampler, a meze platter with dolmades, zucchini flowers, and dolmadakia, followed by fish and beef cheeks. And then came the orange cake, on the house, which I still dream about.

With the smell of the wood-fired stove, the soft chatter of families dining, and the sound of a live lyre filling the space, the atmosphere was magical. It was the perfect ending to our time on the island.

Crete isn’t just a destination you visit, it’s one you taste. From rustic tavernas to elevated dining experiences, the food here tells a story of tradition, community, and pride in local ingredients. These restaurants stood out not just for what was on the plate, but for how they made me feel while dining there.
