Athens is one of those cities where you could spend your entire trip eating and still leave feeling like you barely scratched the surface. From buzzing mezedopoleia (which translates to restaurant built around meze) tucked into the Central Market to rooftop terraces with uninterrupted Acropolis views, the food scene here is layered, soulful, and endlessly exciting.
As someone who returns to Athens year after year, and as a travel advisor who sends clients to Greece constantly, I get asked the same question: “Where should we actually eat?”
This is my personal list of places I consistently recommend to clients and always find myself returning to.

Tucked along a quiet pedestrian lane in Plaka, just beneath the Acropolis, Lyra is effortlessly one of the most beautifully positioned restaurants in Athens. Tables spill into a softly lit alley, live Greek music drifts through the air, and the Acropolis rises above you; it’s the kind of setting that feels almost cinematic.
The menu blends traditional Greek dishes with a slightly modern touch, pulling inspiration from across the country. Expect classics like moussaka, grilled lamb, fresh salads, and thoughtfully prepared meze. It strikes that perfect balance between relaxed and special, ideal for your first night in Athens or a memorable final dinner.
This is one of those places my clients always come home talking about.

An Athenian institution since 1927, Klimataria is where you go when you want to experience the city’s soul. Think slow-cooked meats, wine poured straight from the barrel, and live rebetiko music filling a vine-covered courtyard.
It may carry an old-world charm, but the energy here is anything but quiet. The menu shifts seasonally, but staples like roast lamb and keftedakia (Greek meatballs) never miss.
Reserve ahead for Thursday–Saturday evenings when the music starts around 10 pm, and if the weather allows, request a courtyard table, it’s where the magic happens.

If there’s one non-negotiable stop in Athens, it’s O Thanasis. Located in Monastiraki Square, this legendary souvlaki spot has been serving locals and visitors since the 1960s, and for good reason.
The menu is simple: perfectly grilled minced beef and lamb, served with pita, onions, tomatoes, and a dusting of paprika. That’s it, and it’s done flawlessly. Order the yogurt kebab (giaourtlou), grab a table outside, and take in the energy of the square. No reservations needed, which makes it perfect for a casual lunch break between exploring. Add a cold Mythos, and you’re doing Athens exactly right.

“Avli” translates to yard, and that’s exactly what you’ll find: a tucked-away courtyard that feels more like dining at someone’s home than at a restaurant. Hidden behind a small walkway, this spot offers a quieter, more local experience away from the main tourist flow. The menu focuses on classic Greek comfort food: generous mezedes, fresh salads, and well-executed traditional dishes. This is where Athenians actually eat. Perfect for a relaxed lunch or a low-key dinner, especially if you’re traveling with family or a group and want something authentic without the chaos.
Estiatorio Milos €€€

This is Athens dining at its most refined. Founded by Chef Costas Spiliadis, Estiatorio Milos is built on a simple philosophy: exceptional ingredients, handled with minimal intervention.
At the Athens location, his most personal outpost, you’ll select your fish directly from the day’s fresh catch, choose your preparation, and experience Greek cuisine at its purest. From the octopus with fava to the signature Milos Special, every dish is a masterclass in simplicity done right.
The space itself is stunning, with white marble, high ceilings, and understated elegance that never feels overdone. This is the dinner you plan your day around. Ideal for a honeymoon, anniversary, or a “we deserve this” kind of night. Reserve in advance, dress up slightly, and let the sommelier guide you through the all-Greek wine list.

Dolli’s delivers that elevated, polished dining experience that lingers long after the trip ends. With a refined Mediterranean menu and a setting that feels both elegant and inviting, it’s a go-to for a more sophisticated night out. The Acropolis views alone make it worth it, but the food holds its own, making it a favorite for clients celebrating something special or simply wanting to start (or end) their trip on a high note. Reservations are essential, especially since it’s connected to the iconic Dolli Hotel.
360 Rootop €€

For one of the best views in Athens, 360 Rooftop is a must. Overlooking Monastiraki, it offers sweeping panoramas of the Acropolis, Ancient Agora, and the city skyline. The cocktails are solid, the energy is lively, and while the food isn’t the main attraction, the overall experience makes it unforgettable.
This is my go-to recommendation for a first night in Athens. arrive 30–45 minutes before sunset or book ahead to secure a prime spot. Weeknights are your best bet for a more relaxed vibe.

For a more local nightlife feel, Hyper Astro is where Athens comes alive after dark. Recommended to me by my Athenian cousin (which tells you everything you need to know), it’s the kind of place locals actually choose for a night out. Expect creative cocktails, a stylish crowd, and an atmosphere that makes you want to stay for “just one more.” Whether you stop in for a pre-dinner aperitif or end your night here, it’s an easy addition to any evening plan. Just note: there’s typically a minimum spend depending on your reservation spot, but for the experience, it’s worth it.
Athens isn’t just a city you visit, it’s one you taste. The best meals here aren’t always the most expensive or the most photographed; they’re the ones that make you slow down, stay a little longer, and order just one more dish.
These are the places I trust, return to, and recommend to every client heading to Greece. Whether you’re here for your first trip or your fifth, this list ensures you experience Athens the way it’s meant to be: through long meals, great wine, and moments that turn into memories.
And if you’re planning your own trip, this is just the beginning
